Utah Single Fly kicks off on the Green
Members of "The State Street Irregulars" enjoy dinner at Red Canyon Lodge before drawing their guides for the fourth annual Utah Single Fly, which starts today.
Fifteen teams of four anglers each gathered Thursday evening at Red Canyon Lodge near Dutch John, Utah, to draw guides for today's fourth annual Utah Single Fly tournament on the storied Green River.
The event, which helps benefit TU's on-the-ground work in Utah, starts at 8:30 a.m. today, with anglers required to stop fishing at 5 p.m. The rules are pretty simple--fishermen get a single fly for the day, with prizes awarded to those teams that catch the biggest trout and the most trout, among a host of other awards, including the angler who shows up at the river wearing the ugliest outfit. Winners will be announced at a dinner event tonight, where attendees can also bid on silent auction items and win door prizes for participating.

"We can't thank the guides enough," said TU's Dave Kumlien, who shepherds the organizations Aquatic Invasive Species program. "These folks give their time and share their knowledge of the river with anglers who pay good money to participate in this really successful event. Without them, we wouldn't have a Utah Single Fly."
TU's ongoing work in Utah includes efforts to keep priceless water in the system and prevent a massive pipeline from being constructed that would siphon off about 80 billion gallons of water from Flaming Gorge Reservoir every year for use on Colorado's Front Range. The impacts of the water diversion could be troublesome for both the economically vital reservoir in northeast Utah, and possibly for the trophy trout fishery below the dam--many consider the Green to be the best tailwater fishery in the country.
In addition to volunteer guides, other sponsors of the event include Red Canyon Lodge, Holland and Hart, Flaming Gorge Resort, Winston and Hyde Drift Boats.
